Welcome to the world of Paul Lorei Photography in Erie, PA. Capture a glimpse of the studio, staff and style of this innovative portrait art gallery. Take a mini-tour with the most creative family, children and beach photographer in Northwest Pennsylvania.

Paul Lorei began his photography career in the advertising business. He worked for a large New York firm then several small agencies in Texas as a client liaison, copywriter and photo art director.

In 1986, after moving back to Erie and the sunny shores of Presque Isle, he got behind the camera and began working for his father, a much loved school photographer.

In 1990, while in graduate school and teaching at Gannon University, he started his own business in a tiny room in the back of his house. Within a few years, what started as a part time diversion became a full time profession. His adventures have given him the rare privilege of photographing a president, a governor, an Olympian, a rock star and the pope. Yet, perhaps his favorite images will always be of family and children - often outdoors.

Paul is a Certified Professional Photographer, a member of several organizations including: Professional Photographers of America, Wedding & Portrait Photographers International and National Association of Photoshop Professionals. He and his lovely wife, Gretchen, have five children.

How long have you been in business?
Paul worked in photography and advertising for nine years prior to opening his own business in 1990. The business started in a small room in the back of his house and has grown dramatically since then.

How much are your sessions?
A deluxe half hour in-studio session is only $39. On location for one hour is $119 to $150 depending on the assignment. Please contact us for specials or specific quotes.

How much are your 8x10s?
With a package, an 8x10 is only $45.

Do you retouch?
Yes. Retouching is included with every package. We do extensive work on each portrait including: lines under the eyes, blemishes, facial shine, glass glare, discolored teeth, and much more. We can also (within limits) slenderize, enhance and soften—turning the mundane into the mesmerizing.

Who will be doing the photography?
Paul Lorei is the principal photographer and photographs families, children, couples and individuals--just about everything except weddings. Igor Titoff is the wedding specialist.

Where are you located?
We are in northwestern Pennsylvania (Erie, PA) near the Millcreek Mall, close to Dempsey & Baxter. We serve the Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York area.

What are your hours?
M-F, 9-5 by appointment. Some evenings and weekends are available.

How do I go about signing up?
Call us 9-5 Monday thru Friday. Our phone number is 814-868-0888. Or, fill out the form on our website.
If you need a photographer on a specific date (or need a portrait by a specific date) please tell us to make arrangements. We do our best to accommodate but often book early.

Do you travel?
Yes. Most of our work is in northwest Pennsylvania. However, for the right project, we’ll travel just about anywhere.

Do you take black & white?
All the time.

What should we wear?
Clothing is essential in creating a beautiful and stunning portrait. At the consultation, when you decide on the style of portrait you like, we work with you to create that vision. The clothing of each subject should coordinate harmoniously with the background.

Do you do business portraits?
Yes, our one-hour business portraits are quite popular. If you need a handsome, retouched portrait that you can use on the web, in a brochure or in any marketing or advertising, this is a tremendous value. We’ll take 10-20 images of you, have you pick out your favorite, then we’ll retouch it before your eyes. We fix lines under the eyes, blemishes and shine. We also brighten teeth and eyes, slenderize and soften where needed. Business portraits are both inexpensive and painless.

Do you photograph large groups?
All the time. We’ve photographed family groups as large as 50-60 people. Coming from a large family himself, Paul is very comfortable photographing families big and small. We work well with children and infants. In studio, the largest group we can accommodate is about 30-35.

Do you do many weddings?
We do a limited number of weddings every year.

Do you take commercial assignments?
Yes. Over the years we’ve created stunning images for magazines, brochures and the web. Paul’s early professional years were spent in commercial/advertising photography. Commercial photography was his first love.

Are your photos guaranteed?
Yes, your portraits come with a risk-free guarantee. If for any reason you are not happy with your finished portraits, we will make corrections at no charge. Or have your entire portrait deposit refunded. (Portraits must be returned within a week of delivery.)

Are you a member of any professional associations?
Paul is a Certified Professional Photographer. He is a member of Professional Photographers of America, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International, and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.

Do you do proofs or a presentation?
A presentation. After the portrait session, at a time that is convenient for you, we project all of the images on a big screen in a lovely slide show. Then it’s a matter of selecting your favorites. Because the images are projected large, it is easy to look closely and compare. We can also do some preliminary retouching to give you a glimpse into the magical possibilities of image enhancement.

Do the photos come in different finishes?
Yes, we have three finishes: canvas, fine art, and satin. All small portraits are finished in satin unless otherwise requested.

Canvas has the timeless beauty of a fine painting. The texture and richness of our Custom Canvas is stunning.

Fine Art finish looks very artsy and contemporary. We apply a painterly look to the image then custom-print it on a gorgeous Hahnemule German-etching paper that gives it a rich, soft and artistic look. It works particularly well for color portraits with lighter softer hues giving it a more watercolor look.

Satin is our standard finish. It looks great with photography and has a semi-gloss look. It is always popular and sure to please.

Do you offer paintings from portraits?
Yes, we started creating custom-paintings from photographs in 2007. Although in its infancy, the results are breathtaking. I will only create a few paintings a year, so please call for a consultation and a quote. Serious inquiries only.

When do we order?
The presentation day is the order day. Be sure that all the important decision makers are present to help make this process move along as smoothly as possible.

Can I order in packages or individually?
Yes – either way. Packages are always the better value. If what you want does not fit into a package – we’ll do our best to make a package.

Do you accept credit cards?
Yes, Master Card, Visa, and Discover.

When do we pay?
Payment is requested on the day the order is placed. If you have special circumstances, please let us know.

Do you participate in any continuing education?
We go to a major national conference every year. We also go to one or two small regional conferences. We are constantly refining our style, forever pushing the envelope of creativity trying to improve the quality of our product.

Do you have a portrait philosophy?
We create warm and natural art portraits of families, children and individuals on location, at the beach, or in our boutique studio. Our lighting, posing, expression and background all harmonize to create singular powerful images.

In studio we use a minimum of props—relying primarily on lighting and composition to create drama. On location the goal is for our clients to look natural and authentic in their surroundings.

Why should we choose you?
If you’re looking for something that’s nicer, more artistic and more expertly created, come to us. Perhaps we are best known for families at the beach, children in studio and individual portraits everywhere. (And, yes, our weddings are pretty good too.)

Where can we see more of your work?
There is nothing like seeing our portraits in person. Please call to set up an appointment to visit our studio.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, you can get them for any amount you like. They make a great gift.

Do you do any public speaking?
Yes. Paul is available to speak to civic and professional organizations. He’s an amiable speaker. His knowledge of photography, lighting and how to capture stunning images is both captivating and insightful.

Do you have a blog?
Please check out LoreiPortraits. It is a new blog but one sure to please those interested in the art and story behind the photograph. Consider it a kind of recipe book for portrait artists.

The Adventures of Jimmy Wiggle:
Boy Meets Wolf

Many of you know that I have been working on a children's novel off and on for the last ten years. I'm very excited to be putting the finishing touches on the manuscript.

It is an adventure story about a boy who never wins and his amazing encounter with a charming but conniving wolf. Full of laughs, suspense and action, it is a fun and delightful read. If you like Peter Pan, The Hobbit or anything by Roald Dahl, you'll love this book.

Although I can't offer it to you yet, stay tuned dear reader. Stay tuned.

All-Star Charity
YMCA Strong Kids

This was our 2nd year hosting the city vs. county high school All-Star Soccer Game. It was a great success. The game went into overtime (with the county getting the W), the large crowd saw some impressive soccer, and the event raised $2300.

All the proceeds went to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign giving disadvantaged kids a chance to go to camp and experience the thrill of athletics.

And, speaking of soccer, Paul's son, Andy Lorei, was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play professional soccer. He signed with the Rochester Rhinos.

MAY 2008

Greetings
After dinner a few weeks back, our ten year old daughter looked around the dining room walls and said, "Dad, you have a picture of everyone else on the wall but me." In one swift statement, I was charged, tried and found guilty.

So, I set up a time to photograph the charming little conniver. And, as you can see by the image on the right, we created a look that is so stunning and artistic, we began experimenting a bit more. To the drop-jawed surprise of friends and clients alike, our Adventure In Motion portraits both amaze and delight. I promise, you won't find portraits like this anywhere else. See the story below.

Also, Mother's Day is upon us. And, when I think of my own mom, the mother of eight boys and two girls, I think of courage, sacrifice and good cheer in the face of overwhelming odds. When I was about 30, I calculated the number of times my mother changed diapers, washed clothes and served dinner. The numbers were so staggering, I felt myself dwarfed by comparison. At that point I began to realize the incredible sacrifices that moms (and dads) make for their children. Being a mom is a battle, a good battle, and one well worth the fight. So, here's to the moms out there, heroes every one.

It Happened Last Summer
A true story

One particular evening last summer, armed officers stood in front of a police barrier at the entrance to the Presque Isle. They turned away cars, joggers, bikers--even photographers.
The problem was, I had an appointment to photograph the Lesoski family at the beach. And since I did not want to be arrested, I thought there must be some other way to create beach photos.
So, I called my good friend, Mike Dzuricky, and asked a monumental favor. And Mike, being the generous guy that he is, offered to take us in his boat. In short order we had the whole family plus yours truly and camera gear in the boat and riding the waves on the high seas. We motored past the entrance to the bay and around the end of the peninsula to the placid shores of beach II. There, we disembarked in almost three feet of water and waded to shore. It proved to be worth the effort. We got some great shots.
And to think we had to face armed police and adventure on the high seas all for a family portrait.

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Fifteen years ago I began telling bedtime stories to my children. They were kids stories complete with a ten year old hero (Jimmy Wiggle) and a treacherous yet sophisticated wolf bad guy (Professor Wolfman). The encounter always happened in the woods and our hero always prevailed despite finding himself in some dire predicaments.

So, about ten years ago, I began writing the definitive Jimmy Wiggle story. Six years ago, my computer crashed and with it some 150 pages and several years of work.
A few months ago, Tom Gleeson, my computer guy, retrieved the files off the dead machine and Jimmy Wiggle came roaring back to life. Only now, the story is a trilogy. I'm hoping to have the first book completed in the next few months. As far as when it is published, well, that's another story.

MARCH 2008

Greetings
We're so excited to present to you the first issue of our e-newsletter. We have some very cool new products and offerings that we can't tell you about any other way.

But before we get into that, please allow me to thank all of you for your support and encouragement over the years. What started as a part time job to keep my young family fed during graduate school has developed into this rather wonderful business. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the eyes of many a brave mom (and dad) get glassy and tear-laden as we presented the finished portraits.
It's beautiful. Thanks.

All the Best,

Bike Across PA
YMCA Strong Kids

Last fall Paul rode 415 miles across the great state of Pennsylvania on his bicycle. It was a fundraiser for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign to enable disadvantaged kids a chance to go to camp and experience the exhilaration of athletics.

The trip was filled with grueling climbs and stunning descents--all in all a great adventure for a great cause.
In two years Paul is thinking about skiing the Birkebeiner, a 30 mile cross country ski race in northern Wisconsin. Perhaps he needs counseling.

Ideal Ages for Children

We're often asked, "When is the best time to photograph my child?" The short answer is, "Today." The longer answer is the Seven Ages of Childhood. There are seven distinct periods in your child's life when they look, think and act differently. In short, those Ages are: The First Year, Age 2, Age 3, Age 4-5, Age 6-8, Age 9-12, Age 13-15. In each phase your child will be uniquely different. And you'll want to be sure that you capture those ages forever.

The best thing to do is to have your child photographed on a regular basis. You may consider our Children's Portrait Club.

When you're a member, you'll get regularly scheduled portraits at a substantial savings (about 30%). The "Look at Me" allows you to get a free session and a free portrait for each birthday. The "I'm Growing Up" does the same but includes a beautiful album to showcase your portraits. Call for more details.
